چکیده

The current generation of Cherenkov telescopes is mainly limited in their gamma-ray energy and flux reconstruction by uncertainties in the determination of atmospheric parameters. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) aims to provide high-precision data extending the duty cycle as much as possible. To reach this goal, it is necessary to continuously and precisely monitor the atmosphere by means of remote-sensing devices, which are able to provide altitude-resolved and wavelength-dependent extinction factors, sensitive up to the tropopause and higher. Raman LIDARs are currently the best suited technology to achieve this goal with one single instrument. However, the synergy with other instruments like radiometers, solar and stellar photometers, allsky cameras, and possibly radio-sondes is desirable in order to provide more precise and accurate results, and allows for weather forecasts and now-casts. In this contribution, we will discuss the need and features of such multifaceted atmospheric calibration systems.

The Cosmic Ray Background as a Tool for Relative Calibration of Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

The atmosphere is an intrinsic part of any ground based Cherenkov γ-ray telescope, and the telescope response is therefore sensitive to unpredictable changes in the atmospheric transparency which are difficult to measure and interpret in the absence of a calibrated beam of high energy γ-rays. In this paper, we use the detector response to Cherenkov emission from cosmic ray initiated air showers...

Simulation Calibration of an Extensive Air Shower array, by a logged data set of its small prototype

Alborz observatory is an EAS array in the heights of Alborez mountain chain near Tehran. For the development of the array, more number of detectors is inevitable. The managing the financial resources and achieving the highest efficiency of the array is important for the project. Therefore, Water Cherenkov Detectors has been used for 9 months in the same way as the previous experiment with Scint...

CTA Atmospheric Calibration

The main contribution to the systematic uncertainties of Atmospheric Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) currently stems from the uncertainty in the determination of atmospheric properties for a given moment of observation. This technique uses the atmosphere as a calorimeter of gamma-ray induced atmospheric air showers and measures the amount of Cherenkov light collected by large mirrors and f...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE VERITAS: Status and Latest Results

VERITAS is an atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array designed to study astrophysical sources of very-high-energy gamma radiation. Located in southern Arizona, USA, the array consists of four 12 m-diameter imaging Cherenkov telescopes. All four telescopes have been deployed at the basecamp of the Whipple Observatory and began full operation in early 2007. This paper describes the operational stat...

Veritas: Status and Performance

VERITAS is an atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array sited in Tucson, Ari-zona. The array is nearing completion and consists of four, 12 m diameter telescopes. The first telescope in the array has been operating since February 2005, while observations with the full array are expected to begin in January, 2007. We report here in some detail on the performance of the first VERITAS telescope, and b...
